Free Online Accounting Programs

Whether you’re just starting your business or you’ve got years of entrepreneurship under your belt, it’s important to keep track of where your money is coming from and going out to.

Bookkeepers and accountants can be worth their weight in gold come tax time, but in the interim, you can save money and keep a tight rein on your budget by using one of the three free online accounting programs below.

Wave Apps

Wave Apps lets clients:

  • maintain customer info
  • create & send estimates & invoices
  • set up sales tax, different expense categories (i.e. expense accounts for auto, insurance, medical, office equipment, etc.)
  • enter expenses & bills
  • acquire statements for profit/loss, expense/income, etc.
  • reconcile transactions
  • get sales tax reports
  • and more for free.

Yes, as in zero dollars and zero cents.

They make their money through payment processing and payroll processing. These are optional services and can be ignored if you don’t need them.

However, say you send a client an invoice through Wave (which is free), you can turn on the ability to have the client pay through Wave with credit, debit or automatic draft.

Once a payment hits Wave, it will automatically be sent to the bank account you set up within two business days. Instant payout is available for a nominal fee.

ZipBooks provides an extensive array of features for a price, but for free, clients can:

  • Send unlimited invoices
  • Manage unlimited vendors & customers
  • Accept digital payments (Square or PayPal)
  • View Basic Reports
  • Connect 1 bank account

Know that PayPal and Square still require a payment processing fee, which is taken from the money received when an invoice is paid.

Akaunting features
Akaunting Feature Overview

Akaunting is a free, open source, online accounting program that allows clients to keep track of income, recurring bills and one-off expenses, send invoices in multiple currencies, set tax rates, get statements and reports and maintain your customer list.

See the full list of features here:

They make their money in the app store. For example, to tie WooCommerce to Akaunting, you’d pay $89 for the app/plugin that would allow WooCommerce and Akaunting to work together.

There is a line on the features page that states, “Send professional invoices to clients and start accepting online payments, no commission/transaction fee.”

However, I’ve been unable to verify if Akaunting means there is absolutely no payment processing fee whatsoever, or that they only charge what Visa, Mastercard, etc. make them charge. I’ve also been unable to confirm that you can accept payments through Akaunting without an additional app purchased from their app store.

The main program is free, though, so it is worth a look to see if it fits your needs.

Bottom Line

Money may or may not be tight, but I think it’s safe to say that “free” works for any budget.
